Editorial Policy
The Journal of Engaged Pedagogy is the academic journal of the Engaged Pedagogy Association. The Engaged Pedagogy Association itself was born from two groups in Japan, Women Educators and Language Learners (WELL) and Gender Awareness in Language Education (GALE), the latter a special interest group of the Japanese Association for Language Teaching (JALT). As members of WELL and GALE began to reach out more to both Japanese and international organizations and conferences, we realized we were in a unique position to serve others through our volunteering as translators, interpreters, editors and activists. We therefore came together to provide a forum for holistic, critical, feminist, radical, queer, spiritual, narrative and reflective approaches to teaching and learning language and cross- cultural studies. The first two volumes were published bilingually in Japanese and English, and the third volume is expected to be trilingual in English, Spanish, and Japanese. In principle, the editors are opposed to the hegemonic ideology of English as an international language, and therefore encourage submissions in any language in the following areas: practical and theoretical articles, research reports, essays, poems and other literary works, artwork, and book reviews. Every effort will be made to provide an English translation of articles submitted in languages other than English, as well as a Japanese and/or Spanish translation of articles submitted in English. >From the second volume, the journal is available by subscription both on-line and in print editions. A print edition of the first volume may be ordered from our homepage.

Guidelines
A key difference in the writing we expect from you is that we want to know who you are and why you came to your topic. We therefore encourage authors to clearly include and reflect upon their own positions, identities, and biographies and also to collaborate with and give credit to others, especially with learners and participants. We believe good writing is clear, easy to understand, and a joy to read (as well as to translate!). Please say what you mean as clearly, simply, and beautifully as possible. At the same time, please experiment with different formats. Don't feel bound by the traditional research article format you are familiar with, but try to find the format that best expresses the spirit of what you want to say.

Style

The Journal of Engaged Pedagogy follows the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (see most recent edition). Consult recent copies of the JALT Journal or TESOL Quarterly for examples of documentation and references.

Full-length articles should be less than twenty A4 or 81/2 by 11 pages, double-spaced, or approximately 3,000 words if in the Roman alphabet.

Last day of October.

Materials to be Submitted
1. Three (3) copies of the manuscript, only one showing your name and identifying information.

Evaluation Procedures
All manuscripts are first reviewed by the editorial board to insure that they comply with The Journal of Engaged Pedagogy Guidelines. Those considered for publication are reviewed and the author is given feedback by at least two readers. If accepted, in most cases the writer will work with a developmental editor to revise the manuscript. We highly value this collaborative process between the authors and the editorial staff. However, the editors reserve the right to accept or reject articles and to make final editorial changes to accepted manuscripts as a condition of publication. Authors for JEP III will be notified of acceptance by the end of December, 2003.

Please send submissions or general inquiries for JEP III by the end of October, 2003 to:
